She's a poet, and I didn't even know it!

As you may recall, Abigail entered a story contest awhile back. We have not heard about the winners of that contest yet, but in the meantime, Abigail has been writing poetry at school. This past Monday, the class hosted a poetry reading in which each child stood up and read 1-2 poems for the parents. The poem that Abigail chose was called, "Smog." It was definitely the darkest of the poems read that day, but I think that people really enjoyed it:
My video and sound quality is awful. So, just in case you couldn't hear it, here is the text:

 Smog

Nightmare
Like a dream
A bad one
A nightmare
But this is worse
This is real
This is my home

Mask
Imagine the face of someone you love
Covered with a mask
As they fight for breath

Gray
My home
Its colors
Gone
Surrounded by gray
A never ending cloud
Stealing the colors
I live in gray

Factories
They saved us
Now they will be our downfall
Taking everything

My life
Lost in the smog
Finding it is like finding the end of a rainbow
Magical
Unlikely

When I received the full book of poetry that she wrote, I also got a kick out of this one, entitled, "Butcher Shop." Here is the text:

Butcher Shop
As I walk into the butcher shop
I'm aghast at the horrors I see in there
The smell of death fills the air
There's blood splattered on the floor
And bodies hanging by the door
I don't think I'll eat meat anymore

How's that for graphic, eh? We don't know how the story writing contest will go, but perhaps these little beauties will find their way into a poetry writing contest in the future. :)

As for the update on the new school, Abigail has visited and loved it. The application is complete, so now there is nothing left to do but wait. Admission decisions are mailed on April 14th, so it'll be awhile before we know anything, but I'll keep everybody posted.
