Hat Day

Last Friday at school was Hat Day. Abbie looked pretty cute in this hat. Unfortunately, somehow after these pictures were taken she misplaced the hat and we are still waiting for it to show up again. I am actually pretty optimistic about it. Earlier this year she lost her waterbottle at school. Then, suddenly, months after the fact, it turned up in the lost and found. Hopefully the hat will also magically turn up.

As we near the end of the school year, I am starting to realize just how much Abbie has learned this year and I am just so impressed. She is doing such a great job with all of her numbers and letters. She is writing pretty much anything she wants now - lists, stories, etc. The tricky part is that all of the spelling is phonetic and there are no spaces between any of the words. However, with a little practice I am getting better at de-coding things. She is also really impressing me with her Spanish. She has started speaking in phrases and short sentences. She'll come home and say something goofy in Spanish to Nancy. Then, she and Nancy will laugh as I just stand there with a dumb look on my face. She will be doing a Spanish immersion class this summer, so I am hopeful that her skills will really take off.

As with most kids Abbie's age, we still struggle with her goofiness from time to time. Part of it is that she is just trying to develop a sense of humor and is testing people to see what is funny and what isn't. Unfortunately, we rarely find someone yelling "poopyhead" and laughing hysterically to be all that funny. Her new thing this week was she wanted to tell actual jokes to get a laugh. Of course, they were all of the "Why did the chicken cross the road?" variety. Turns out that the punchlines to this type of joke have not improved since we were kids. She also tried to do some knock, knock jokes, but she didn't always get the give and take of the responses right and it ended up being kind of torturous.

On tap for this weekend is another birthday party for one of the kids in Abbie's class. All four of us are actually going to this one, however, as it promises to be fun for all. It is a bowling party and the mother of the birthday boy spontaneously assured me that there would also be a bar for the big people. Nice. We haven't been bowling in almost two years so this should be a good time.
