First Day of High School!

Today is Abbie's first day of high school. It is hard to believe that she is already that old. She has been looking forward to getting into high school (and out of middle school) for a very long time. Never did we expect that there would be a pandemic to contend with, however. The side benefit, of course, is that she can attend school in her PJs. :)

Her school has all high school students starting online for the first two weeks and then students can elect to either attend in-person or online thereafter. Naturally, we have already chosen the online option. This is not how anybody wanted the year to go, but there's not much to be done about it. We are just happy that the school is providing the online option.

As you can see, Abbie has her workspace all set up and ready to go. She spent a fair bit of time this summer cleaning and organizing her room. And yes, those are all real plants behind her. We have gotten a bit out of control with the cuttings. LOL!

As for classes, Abbie will have the usual suspects - Geometry, History, Biology, English, French, and Art. In addition, Abbie has elected to move her Art History elective into her freshman year to make space for other electives in the future. This means that she will be a bit busier than some of her classmates, but she has opted out of sports for the fall (due to the pandemic), so that will save her a lot of time each week (although she is bummed to miss out on the volleyball season).

The other thing that has been keeping Abbie really busy lately is her part-time job. She posted an ad on Fiverr earlier this summer, and just over a month ago she landed a job managing the Facebook and Instagram posts for a woman who has a small side business. Abbie is responsible for seven posts per week and for managing all of the comments, etc. So far the woman has been happy with her and has recommended her to other people. Abbie also did a small job for another client last week who wanted an Instagram tutorial. Abbie met with her on Zoom and walked her through everything that she needed to know to manage her profile. She also showed the woman how to make posts on Canva and got the woman started with a few sample posts. It turns out there are a lot of middle-aged women out there who are trying new business ventures and feeling completely overwhelmed by the social media aspects. The big thing will be to make sure that Abbie's Fiverr gigs don't distract from her real job - school!
